  1. NATO WAS willing to engage in a START style treaty. Putin walked away from diplomacy -- to the shock of Europeans -- across the board. NATO membership for Ukraine was a total non-starter -- all along. Ukraine was not even close to qualifying. The 'NATO membership issue' is totally bogus. Study up, you might learn something.

  4.  @hmq9052  NATO was never an issue. Ukraine never qualified. Berlin and Paris didn't want Kyiv in NATO. Right there, Ukraine's candidacy died. Beyond that, no candidate nation can have an open border dispute -- least of all with Russia. Putin made certain that Georgia and Ukraine DID have open border disputes -- by invading both nations. He still holds chunks of both. In his war address, Putin never brought up NATO or the EU as issues motivating his 're-absorption' of the non-nation of Ukraine.

  12.  @ladybug2x2y22z  NATO has no offensive punch whatsoever. Even after Putin's war, NATO is fixated on staying out of a hot war with Moscow. That's the politics of NATO: all defense, all the time. NATO has been structured -- from the first -- to rein in France and Germany. (Read that to mean: Napoleon 2.0; Adolf 2.0.) NATO was the creation of Britain. She sold the idea to Washington, Paris, et. al. by pointing at Stalin and his new Bomb. But Whitehall never forgot Napoleon nor Adolf. NATO's command structure gives all top slots to American generals and admirals. Deputy slots are given to Brits, Germans and the French, et. al, depending on their national priorities. (The UK gets the North Sea naval post for all time. And so forth.) If you'd ever taken the time to read Putin or listen to Putin, you'd know that he wants to revive the USSR/ Tsar's Empire. Period. It's a fixation for him. The EU or NATO, per se, are irrelevant. Empire is everything.

  14. Process of simplification, of elimination. By his own words, deeds, Putin is more afraid of the EU than NATO. Honest markets are anathema to Putin. BTW, it will be amazing if Zelenskyy ever gets Ukraine into the EU. (Membership would qualify Ukraine for immense cross-subsidies.) NATO, of course, is a total non-starter.

  15.  @siphi7583  NATO membership for Ukraine was NEVER on the table -- and Putin knew that all the time. Berlin and Paris refused Kyiv's candidacy -- and still do. So, Ukraine can never be a NATO member. Putin wants to SWALLOW the Donbass... not free it. He's already got a referendum in the works -- so that the Donbass will soon become just 'more Russia.' Get up to speed, and stay there.
