  2. Obvious mental issues -- to wit -- instability -- effectively a dual personality. His situation is tragic. A LOT of his blabber indicates genuine disbelief that he is responsible for her injuries. The 'Other Guy', who he is in conflict with, is his alternate personality. When the cop inquired about the 'Other Guy' he babbled off into sullen silence because of his internal conflict. The 'Other Guy' had no name. You might note that the victim never uttered a word about his rival. She has not put things together. There is no love triangle -- it's all in his head. He is a genuinely disturbed soul. In film, see this in "Psycho" by Hitchcock-> Norman Bates. Instead of getting proper psychiatric treatment -- the 'System' just spins him through another lap in the criminal justice algorithm. His duality is corn fusing everyone around him --> girl friend... motel staff... and the early police convos... ultimately, things got real.
