What sweet lies/ ignorance. Von Braun never stopped working, he just came out of the shadows... that V-2 'thing.' I'll let others corrections stand. The early NASA rockets -- that worked -- were US Army rockets. The USAF was still a bomber force, with no strategic rockets until Jupiter and Atlas and Titan. Jupiters in Turkey were the wellspring of the Cuban Missile Crisis... so well denied when it was underway. And with that, the only component of Jupiter technology and design was the Redstone. It was dialed down for Shepard and Grissom, with water ballast. If this was not done they could never have survived the insane final acceleration. For them, the whole idea was to get them up and down so fast that they should survive. Medicine was so ignorant, no-one bet on surviving zero-G for any real length of time.
