  1. Correction: The American 105mm howitzer is a GERMAN design that dates back to WWI. Yup! When Patton over-ran German formations in France, he captured working howitzers of German manufacture. It is duly recorded that entire batteries of such German guns were fed American ammo -- to be fired upon their former owners. The only significant American improvement was pneumatic tires. The German (originals) had steel wheels with a thin strip of rubber riveted at the rim. The American 155mm howitzers date to WWI and are of FRENCH conception. Both howitzer designs eventually were re-engineered by the US Army so that current breeches are not compatible with WWI/WWII style ammo.
