It's amazing that the Admiral thought that the PoW and Repulse had anything to offer tactically. How could the RN not know of the range of Japanese strike aircraft? Prior experiences in Europe meant absolutely nothing relative to the IJN and IJA. For the Japanese grand tactical theory was that they would strike from a greater range than their enemies. This should've been picked up from their prior activities in China. The rotten AA performance can only be attributed to bad training -- namely that the lads were not pulling enough lead on the enemy planes. This is always a feature of green AA crews. The Mark I eyeball just can't imagine how far ahead one must shoot to ever hit an attacking airplane. You really have to shoot into blank air -- and then watch the plane fly into your bullets.
