You missed it. The 'standards test' is set precisely to ban American beef in Australia. It is ALWAYS adjusted to thwart American beef. There is nothing 'scientific' about it. The financial health of Stations is what's at issue.

US fast food chains sell hugely overseas. They buy their stuff in local markets -- overseas. RFK is going to start fixing USDA standards -- starting with getting rid of artificial colors. They are NOT accepted elsewhere.

@jgill551 Not really. There are certain cuts/ restaurant grade that demand grain-fed beef. Australia scarcely produces grain-fed cattle. Argentina has the same issue. When I go to a steak house, I don't want grass-fed, grass finished steaks. They are too tough. USDA Prime REQUIRES grain finishing. THIS is the grade of beef that Trump and our industry want to export -- not hamburger, etc. As for myself, I buy grass-fed organic beef all the time; and also USDA Prime -- grain fed. ALL of the standards you're so proud of have become import standards precisely to stop American imports. That's the politics of trade. Trump is now changing all of that nonsense. America only aims to sell USDA Prime -- THE grade that can justify airfreight to far lands. In dollar terms, there will never be a major marked for USDA Prime beef -- just only in the restaurant trade.

No-one is the best at everything. The USA is best at INVENTION. American inventions have created the world you now live in. Deal with it. There was a time when Britain was the Top Dog: Watt's steam engine, steam locomotives, steamships, battleships, aircraft carriers. But technology moves on. It'll take another generation, probably a revolution... and then China could be the fount of technological innovation. Having said that, Japan, Korea have had a tough go replacing American invention. Even TMSC is Big based on a BRITISH chip design. Asians are VERY excellent at manufacture, but their culture/ laws don't favor inventors. In Red China, patents are utterly worthless. Music copyrights are worthless. This is why the West still dominates music. Great Chinese musicians are 'kept starving.'

In the USA, food producers have UNLIMITED liability. In the EU, they have no liability. All they have to do is point to the EU standard. History shows that the EU has EPIC fiascos with their approach.

You've got it turned around. In the US, the producer has unlimited liability for bad food. In the EU, if the standard is met, then the producer has NO liability. It was Britain, then inside the EU, who had the MASSIVE beef fiasco a generation ago. In America, every firm involved would've been sued into oblivion, In Britain, no-one was held responsible. Parliament picked up the expense. THAT'S how things really work.

It's mercantile protectionism, period. The EU was crafted solely for the over-riding purpose of keeping America OUT. This started in 1955 with iron and steel: Belgium, France, Germany. This was the EEC. Later the EEC kept growing in every dimension. By the 1990s it was redrafted as the EU, with a rigid exchange rate of European currencies, to boot. Under the ideology of Paris, the EU was structured as a slew of non-tariff trade barriers -- only now addressed by Trump.

@ttuliorancao On a boutique basis, American ranchers also can make the cut. The key thing is that only a very LIMITED amount of non EU beef can survive the non-tariff barrier. ALL of you guys over-look the politics of allowing in imports. Paris is quite against it -- same as ever. Even letting Poland into the EU was an ordeal. Stop being politically naïve. Nothing is as straight forward as the documents set forth. Top notch attorneys crank out the BS that the public is expected to buy. Your eyes would bleed if you had to parse the actual language. Try it, it's always a hoot. Just visit your local law library. You'll walk out with eyestrain and a headache.

@FulloutPostal The standard WAS met, by Britain. Then thousands of illnesses were triggered. The US system is such that even the SLIGHTEST issue causes an immediate recall. Sixty-five-years-ago my Father got word of just TWO off-taste jars of mayonnaise. He called Chicago. The ENTIRE rail shipment was recalled and destroyed. Only a few jars were sent back to Chicago for testing. Best Foods was THAT picky. The food was still safe to eat. But, Corn Product's standards were so high that absolutely nothing was allowed onto the shelf that tasted 'off.' That attitude utterly dominates American food production. It was American food manufacture that created the mass production of food. I must give a hat-tip to the British for inventing the tin-can. Even so, the British army in Crimea discovered that having tin-can technology did NOT mean that all beef was edible. It finally took "The Jungle" to trigger Congress into crafting the FDA. Upton Sinclair aimed for the wallet -- and hit America's gut, instead. Heh. Google it. It's quite the read.

America uses illegal immigrants to butcher meat on a grand scale. That's all that you're looking at. BTW, just about everyone loves grain finished beef. It ran grass fed, grass finished beef out of the market fifty-years ago.

@Kyk_cz The Australian standards block grain-fed beef. Should it be allowed in, it would instantly take over the restaurant trade -- the carriage trade. That's who pays up for USDA Prime. There's nothing second class about USDA Prime. Fifty-years-ago I used to sell USDA Choice - - #1 -- to tourists. Even at the airport my stuff was half price that of Tokyo. Yes, it was all restaurant grade -- the stuff sold it the top ranked restaurants of San Francisco. I sold a couple of tons a month, back then.

@proton8689 The beef at issue is USDA Prime -- not hamburger. BTW, the one reason that the EU wanted Ukraine OUT was because its grain = a new wave of juicy steaks. Trust me, when the war is over, someone is going to make a fortune raising cattle in Ukraine. The Kremlin ruined the Left bank of the Dnipro for farming... but it can sure do business raising cattle. (That dam will have to be rebuilt.)

@proton8689 I strongly doubt that you've ever had USDA Prime on your plate. You'd have to import from Japan to find its equal -- and you couldn't afford Kobe. You've never been eating restaurant grade beef... just the off-cuts. The Caribbean is too poor to afford USDA Prime, let alone Kobe beef. Trump and our industry is not interested in selling hamburger to Europe or anywhere else. American exports are ONLY at the high end of the market. Here and there, such items as oxtails and tongue are big sellers -- due to culture and taste. (Oxtail soup is to die for.) In Samoa, even horse-flesh is in demand. Wow, that's pretty tough meat. BTW, you don't have to eat American beef. Don't worry, everyone else does -- including all ambassadors to Washington. They all chow down. They are used to being spoilt.

These were universally known as "Dollar-a-Year" men. It was THEY how approved the commercial loans. Yes, the Marshall Plan meant that the US was lending DIRECTLY into the Commercial market -- NOT state-to-state. That's what made it innovative, profound. We actually set up a scheme where by traditional lending norms were SET ASIDE. Credit was extended ENTIRELY based on what the "Dollar-a-Year" men signed off on. They were pretty good. None of the loans went sour. (!) Who were those guys? They were the industrial salesmen of their era for everyone from Cincinnati Milacron on over. The VW bug was built using American machine tools via the Marshall Plan. It has been the Americans who revolutionized Ukraine's agribusinesses. That's why you see John Deer tractors pulling T-72 tanks in for a reward. Trump's Big Deal is a PIK plan. The US is NOT going to get stuff for 'free.' The US is going to INVEST Big -- and then take back the back-end of the dealings. In this, Trump is largely replicating the Marshall Plan. BTW, Zelenskyy was an IDIOT for not using LendLease aid provided by Congress back in 2022. It amounted to $20,000,000,000. With it, Zelenskyy could've/ should've ordered EXACTLY what he wanted. He did not need Sullivan's permission/ Biden's largesse. What a fool. By tradition, the US FORGIVES LendLease aid after the war is won. This is done to great fanfare and credit -- to the US President. Famously, illegally, Biden forgave BILLIONS of student aid, just the other month. Far, far more than anything contemplated to Ukraine.

@ Foreign lands use non-tariff trade barriers. Their ''judgment' WRT beef is just CLASSIC. Similar 'judgement' keeps American electrical wire out of Europe! If the wire color is to a NEMA standard -- it's BANNED in Europe. Paris even changed the color of the grounding conductor from green to green + yellow. If, tomorrow, NEMA started cranking out green + yellow wire -- the standard would change -- again. (It used to be just green.) The EU doesn't want even American machines to use American wire. To get them acceptable, the American manufacturers have to import European wire and then send the gear back over to Europe. The whole beef quality/ etc is just such a non-tariff barrier to American exports. Such scams are all over the market place NOT just beef 'quality.' To read you guys, you'd think that Americans are dropping over from eating locally produced beef. The ONE big scandal was in BRITAIN under the EU period. It was EPIC. Google cattle brain infection, Britain. America has never seen its like.

@FelixMeister You're not going to obtain USDA Prime ratings with grass-finished beef. Glass finished, which I eat quite often, is just too unmarbled. It's just not fatty enough. When I'm entertaining at an upscale restaurant I am not looking for great health. I'm looking to sin. When consumers are given a side-by-side shopping opportunity, they go with grain-finished almost every time. Grain -finished beef ran grass-finished beef out of the market fifty-years ago. Grass-finished is a niche market. It costs twice as much per pound and does NOT taste as good. Old guys like me also have teeth issues. This is just another reason why carriage trade restaurants go with USDA Prime or Choice #1. ( There are 5 grades within USDA Choice, last I looked. Even USDA grading has been changed in my career. I'm out now.

@bernhardzunk7402 Beef is an animal by animal kind of thing. Even the same breed and herd do not get graded the same. The whole argument I make is that tales of standards are BS. They are used across the board to stop the importation of anything that would economically damage local interests. Trump feels the same way. His beef is that all prior presidents failed to protect American commercial interests. Things have gotten entirely out of hand. Red China, not Australia, has totally abused the WTO. In particular, Xi has been a bully to Canberra. Xi slammed Aussie exports to Beijing because the PM had a back-bone. Now THAT'S unfair trading.

The USDA kept adjusting its standards to suit. Then Paris changed them one more time. What had been acceptable three-months earlier was now deemed a threat to French society. (Cute) The EU operates to this exact same scheme. You guys need to study up on Game Theory and Real Politics. Stop all the blather about having so-called standards. They don't exist. They are 'Flexibles.' There is absolutely nothing about them that is a standard. They are trade fences that keep growing. The attorneys are very creative. Decades have passed since 1955 and in all that time American steel has been locked out of the EEC, then the EU. Red China is about to run into Paris's wall.

@chromosundrift American top quality beef costs less, much less. As big as Australia is, most of it is desert. Whereas the US has immense range, a bigger herd, even cheaper grain. It's in such excess that we even give it away to the poor, grain that is.

ALL EU standards are aimed at stopping imports from outside the trading bloc. This has been a birthright policy plank as far back as 1955 -- the EEC. I realize that I'm posting to folks very much younger, who actually believe the financial propaganda emanating from Brussels. Stop doing that. The whole idea behind a trading bloc -- all of them -- is to rig trading in favor of the insiders and against the outsiders. Trading blocs are the fundamental reason for European colonialism. Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands ALL established trading blocs within their immense empires. America was always the outside power. At its core, America is the anti-Colonial power that got really, really big. This stems from 1775 et seq. From 1945 onward, American policy has been to destroy all colonial empires -- so as to rip apart the associated trading blocs. Right now, America is on course to destroy the last two empires: Red China and Russia. This is destined to happen regardless of Trump's diplomacy.
