Coastal artillery was HUGE in the Soviet campaign. The Krauts never did get rid of the guns at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. This had HUGE significance as the Soviets attacked out of this zone to crush Army Group North. Further, it was the coastal artillery of Sevastopol that forced 11th Army to employ super siege guns. Until they arrived -- a very costly project -- the Germans were just totally frustrated. As for La Havre, its guns forced the British to stay out of range. Real attempts were made to get rid of them. One attempt, IIRC, cost John F. Kennedy's older brother to lose his life. He volunteered to fly a war-weary B-17 into said guns. It blew-up in flight, instead. Smart weapons have made such assets worthless -- but they were a Big Thing in WWII.
