  1. The Soviet 14.5mm gun was their version of the Browning M-2 .50 Cal. Like so many adopted weapons, the Soviets just HAD to bump up the diameter of the barrel... just like their 82mm mortar. The use of this rifle against tanks is quite appropriate since Browning's ORIGINAL intention was for the M-2 to defeat TANKS. It was so effective at defeating WWI armor that every one of them was retired. The M-2 then stopped being an anti-tank weapon. Though it was noted that it was quite capable of ruining German and American half-track armor... usually. It was soon realized that it could destroy most ANYTHING: air craft, men, buildings, equipment -- even tin cans.
