ONLY a professor can equate the US with Japan, China, Russia across millennia. I just had to stop. This pitch was the vanity of arrogance writ public. Glenn, here's some news for you. A century ago, WWI, the MOST aggressive public and private voices for War came from WOMEN. Why? They universally want protection. They need it -- at all times -- even more than men -- as they are lovers, not fighters. Duh. They must look to police, armies to do the deed. Men, obviously, aren't too happy about going off to war so as to be crippled or die. Amazing!

@steve.k4735 No victorious Great Power in history EVER proffered the support to others like the USA -- from 1945 onward. ONLY an indoctrinated, college educated, 'brilliant' guy could come up with your thesis. The EU's PRIMARY focus has always been on thwarting American economic dominance. This started back in 1955 with the compact between Germany, France and Belgium to protect their Steel industries. Entire books were published -- to great Nationalist reviews advancing the thesis that such Protectionism must be scaled up. (The American Challenge, Servan-Schreiber, 1967.)

The USA established the Marshall Plan ( Actually the Truman Plan, he wrote it, Marshall spoke it.) which was intended to aid EVERY nation from the Soviet Union to the Atlantic. Yes, the plan included Stalinist Russia. This reality totally destroys your thesis that it, the charity, was oriented along Great Power calculations. If you read ANY of the literature from the period you'd note that the impulse came from CHARITY. (C.A.R. E. anyone?) Traditionally, a nation in such a position merely moves in to conquer distraught lands, one way or another. That was the European solution after military conquest. Whereas the US Army couldn't wait to head back home. In 1945 the warrior army returned to the States, and a bunch of draft avoiding peaceniks were sent over to replace them. Contrast that with the USSR.
