@dinos9607 Ukraine was NEVER a candidate for NATO membership -- and Putin knew that from the first. Why? By its charter, no NATO candidate nation can have open border disputes of any kind. By his land grabs in Georgia and Ukraine, Putin KNEW that both had to be rejected. Further, no nation can join NATO if even ONE existing NATO nation objects. Both France and Germany objected to Ukraine's membership. Putin knew that, too, all along. They still object. Estonia became a NATO member because Moscow assented. Yes, even Russia was asked for its position.

@futsk01 The Donbas friction was a creation of the KGB/FSB. Yes, it was THAT obvious -- noted immediately -- openly discussed in the media at the time. There is no repression of Russian civil rights within Ukraine -- even now.

@dinos9607 NATO is a dead-letter for Ukraine -- and always has been. Putin knows this, has always known it. NATO will not accept into its ranks any nation that has open border disputes. So, Georgia and Ukraine are OUT. Estonia only became a NATO member with Moscow's permission. Yup! You might note that NATO positions nothing in Estonia that would threaten Russia.

@dinos9607 Lastly your trade routes of discussion are overwhelmingly between NATO economies. Russia is -- and will remain -- a fringe player. Indeed, Putin is triggering autarky... and near universal poverty for Russians. At least he'll be remembered.

@dinos9607 NATO is the alliance at the top of the heap. Deal with it. Putin has made NATO more unified than ever, of course. Putin is only smart -- to a point. He's managed to checkmate himself.

@dinos9607 It is Putin that has gotten weird. BTW, your entire analysis is of the 18th Century. It's that dated. In our time of ICBMs, 18th Century thinking is just bizarre. And... it is obvious that Putin wants to take his gambit all the way to nukes -- as he figures Biden is a total flake. The West sees that. But at the moment of ultimate decision, Putin's dream, will Biden even be president ? I doubt it. Pelosi will probably call the shot. She's a hot head, erratic, Putin's twin, after a fashion.

@destroya3303 Ukraine was NEVER a candidate for NATO. Putin knows this. You've been duped. Estonia is next to Saint Petersburg -- yet has no missiles. None of the Baltic states have offensive weapons. NATO simply will not locate missiles close to Russia. (cruise or ballistic) They would be destabilizing. Duh. Yet Putin has spent large on hyper-sonic warheads. These ARE destabilizing. They are first strike weapons. Fortunately, hyper-sonics only really work when aimed at Red China by Russia -- or vice versa. America is actually too far away. (Flying through the upper atmosphere kills any weapon's range.)

@jerryle379 THAAD can't function against ballistic missiles going UP... only warheads coming down from space. Red China hates THAAD because its radar can dope out Red China's test launches. It also functions as an emergency alert system for both Korea and Japan. It makes shooting atomic IRBMs against Korea and Japan VERY problematic. Red China caused its own headache by gifting the Kim clan atomic and rocket technology. Otherwise, THAAD would never have been deployed. (THAAD was designed to stop a tyrant like Saddam Hussein, not Red China.)
