Adolf pulled a full panzer army and infantry army out of the East to occupy Italy, the Balkans and southern France. The true fiasco for the Luftwaffe: they literally ran out of avgas. (!) Soviet accounts tell of finding entire squadrons caught on the ground for lack of fuel... but only near the end. Before then, the Luftwaffe was just chewing up the Soviets. Goering had wildly under-estimated Red Air Force strength. The offensive had to end when the Luftwaffe ran low on avgas. This was never admitted to at the time -- or even years afterwards. The defeat of the Luftwaffe was more significant than the tank battle. Adolf simply stopped grand attacks in the East.
