  1. One quibble, Gaza was an Egyptian fort/military base even in 1948. It was from this very spot that Egypt supplied its intervention forces. Upon defeat, the Egyptians simply pulled back into their fort. Gaza was a military outpost even under the Ottomans. It had potable water. But, it's a barely drinkable water. Gaza can only exist in the modern day with imported water from Israel. (To name but one item.) Ethnically, the typical Gazan is an EGYPTIAN by DNA. It was not a place that other Arabs wanted to retreat to in 1948. ( Again, the water -- and absolutely NO economic activity. ) It was CAIRO that stuffed more (poverty stricken) Egyptians into Gaza as an Islamic riposte -- to create facts on the ground for its very tenuous political claim to Gaza. Over the years, the folks there have become indoctrinated into the strange conception that they are Palestinians... just like those in the West Bank. This concept had huge appeal to Arafat, of course. All of this explains why Hamas and the PLA actually hate each other. They are not brothers, at all. Hamas gained power in an election that featured area wide assassinations of PLA candidates. I'm amazed that this history is never brought up. Hamas is also a product of AQ connected fanatics -- who were famed for assassinating Egyptian politicians. No wonder Cairo wants Hamas contained. Plainly, many an authority was bought off with UNRWA funding over the years. A real quid pro quo situation.
