  1. It was designed as a troop-ship -- and a great deal of its financing came from the US government -- exactly due to this specification. This ship was commissioned with the full understanding that the Cunard giants were not going to be available for WWIII. Her extreme speed was intended to allow her to entirely out-run Soviet submarines. Once atomic submarines became operational -- the idea of using troop ships for transit to Europe died. Enter: the C-141 and the B-707. The US simply does not use troop ships any more.
