  1. That Soviet attack was code named "Mars." It received MORE of everything compared to "Saturn." Post-war stats indicate that the Red Army lost over 400,000 casualties --> usually by death because of the extreme weather. "Mars" caused Adolf to shift an entire panzer corps -- sitting as grand tactical reserve -- from the Stalingrad front to the Moscow fight. THIS is almost never brought up when the fiasco of Sixth Army is discussed in pop military histories. THIS was the panzer corps that Paulus was actually waiting for, not 57th Corps. ( Army Group Don -- von Manstein ) It was at full strength, just sitting astride the rail network.
