The answer is easy: the Luftwaffe ran out of avgas. Naturally, this fact is not brought up in any German post-war account. The Red air force shot the Luftwaffe to pieces -- on the ground -- as its pilots looked on helplessly. The Luftwaffe was never a serious factor on the eastern front thereafter. With no local air superiority - any attack was hopeless.

@IvoryKing-q3b The Stalingrad air lift destroyed the heart of the Luftwaffe on the Eastern Front. Period. The killing was by way of anti-aircraft guns, rotten landings and direct tank assaults upon 'naked' Luftwaffe air strips. ( One Lt. Col. became a 'Hero of the Soviet Union' for this latter achievement.) The Luftwaffe was not confronted by the Reds in the air -- as flying conditions were horrific -- and beyond Red flying skills. Kursk was the last gasp -- operationally. The Luftwaffe started out strong -- really kicking butts. It all came to an end -- when the avgas finally ran out. The Reds simply showed up with FAR more pilots and machines than the Germans ever dreamed of. [ The tempo of operations was so frantic that the logistics boys failed to bring up fuel fast enough. ] In this, the air battle replicated the ground fight. The Reds simply mobbed the Germans.
