Aachen was actually ready to be given over to 1st US Army as an open city. When it stopped advancing, everything changed. If Aachen had been accepted -- a few jeeps would do -- the US Army would've been over the Rhine PDQ. War over. Yup. This sequence is so painful to relate that historians DON'T bring it up.
