  1. El Duce figured that he could link up Libya and his African possessions... and the Suez Canal was a money-spinner. By getting astride the Red Sea, el Duce figured that the British would HAVE to abandon Egypt. As it turned out, the British were way to much for Italy to 'handle.' At every turn, the British routed the Italians during the early going.
