No GOLD. Rome conquered EVERY gold bearing land: Gaul, Spain, England, Romania,... in each case only after MAJOR reverses. Rome discovered that Germans had no gold... no gold deposits, no gold mines. In ancient times, France, Spain, Romania and England were gold producers. England also had TIN. Tin was much more valuable back then than it is today. Germany just had forests.

@commenter4190 Strangely, the Romans aped Greek culture -- but did not seriously pursue Greek science. The Romans found Greek technologies amusing -- but not worth a second thought. They also disdained mathematics. Check out their crazy Roman numeral system -- which was already obsolete 20 centuries ago. The Romans never picked up on Indian (Hindu) mathematics -- even though Rome was trading rather intensively with India for centuries. ( Spices did the trick. ) The Arabic numeral system was merely a re-branding of the Indian scheme. Even now, math profs use Arabic terms for Hindu discoveries.
