His was the OFFICIAL perspective -- and is now codified into USN lore. His account is considered the best account of a naval action -- ever. (!) Gay seems to have had a photographic mind.

Where it counted, the Greeks had SEASONED men in their fleets. They did not use Slaves in their battle ships. And Greece was, like Britain and Japan, an island nation, a trading nation. Such nations are ALWAYS extremely difficult to invade. The USA reached for atomics rather than go with traditional invasion. The Greeks rowed rings around their enemies. By taking away the Med the Greeks created a logistics nightmare for the Persians. They had to hump everything to battle from a heck of a distance away -- whereas the Greeks could float their stuff all the way to the Levant. Not using the sea was the Primary reason the Crusades did not succeed. I can't fathom why the Crusaders didn't comprehend that a fleet of transports would make the Holy Land seem like it was a short, easy float away.

Even more important, hanging around would chance a surface action. Night or day, the USN would've been blasted out of the water.
