Land conquest has negative externalities for Moscow. Yeltsin dumped the Empire because it was a LOSER for Russia.
In our atomic age, no army, especially not NATO, is going to move east into Russia.
The whole planet knows of Napoleon and Hitler.
The eternal threat to Russia is DEMOGRAPHICS.
Today that largely means Muslim demographics and immigration.
Even without any change in Russia's borders, she will be over-run by Muslim demographics.
This figures to happen even faster in Russia than it does in Western Europe -- though it looks to be a close-run contest.
Muslims, because if Islamic norms, can't contribute to a modern economy.
Islam demands too much of any Muslim's time and dedication.
So, it's hardly any wonder that the 57 Muslim states are, collectively, at the bottom of most economic indexes. The wealthier Muslim states are compelled to import talent. Their own boys are too busy with their devotions to Allah. Islam is all consuming.
Hence, on present trends, Russia is going to simply just run out of talent, run out of Slavs.
