  1. The legend is that Indonesia had a hyper-quake + volcano that blew the Island of Java clear of the mainland -- all in one go ! Life was devastated for a vast distance. BTW, your graphic is wrong. The wave function of a tsunami is LONG and only exceptionally 'breaks.' It just doesn't stop.

  4. The Welcome Stranger is the classic example of tertiary enrichment -- being of biogenisis. The magma intrusion some 400,000,000 YBP was eroded to create 'organic gold' very much in the matter of Au(CN)2- which was then deposited in organic decomposition in an ancient swamp. (Bog Iron is another instance of this process.) That such a huge nugget could be re-deposited is rather astounding. It's an indication that re-deposition occurred over millions of years. (!!!)

  5. The Bigger Story is that the the USA went onto Britain's GOLD STANDARD rather quickly after the Welcome Stranger was discovered. So, the story is a LOT bigger than the discovery of a monumental nugget. Between the British Empire and the American colossus, the Western world was pulled onto the gold standard. At all times prior, SILVER was international money... not gold. Silver was called out in the US Constitution as official money. Gold was the back-up metal. The shift away from silver infuriated France, Austria, Spain -- and many Americans, too.
