@aaronlevy6054 NO. You're looking at exactly what an overt narcissist would do. HW went from Golden Child to Scapegoat at a stroke. The process is known as "the discard." The second HW stopped propping up Daniel's ego -- he had to be discarded. HW was not going to compete with Daniel in the oil business. An oil strike in Mexico was iffy -- and no factor in oil prices. (Just too tiny. BTW, Mexican oil only became a significant factor until years after 1927.) HW was competing with Daniel's EGO - his self-image. Daniel was also impossible to even be around. He was a profound overt narcissist. Study up on these creeps.

@chadrowe2275 They were mirrors. Daniel was an overt narcissist. Eli was a covert narcissist. By the end, both were murderers. ( Eli murdered the 99-year old man. He could no longer wait for his death. He had to cover his embezzlement from his own ministry. You're expect to figure this out after you've left the theater. It's his money crisis that drove Eli to wake Daniel up out of the gutter. Yeah, he couldn't even wait for Daniel to wake up regular way. He starts out pitching God, charity and niceness -- and then drops the pretense to admit that he's in a REAL bind. When Eli maintains that he's Daniel's friend, it's his doom. Just ask Henry.)

@liamdevine8063 Read up on "War Machine and his prison term. He has his own video history you can watch. His sadism is bound up with many NPD traits. As a profession mixed martial arts wrestler he had an intense need to be a winner at all times -- carrying on this aura even outside the ring. What you must understand about the weaker sex: such alpha male behavior is cat nip to them. They can produce the babies. What they crave is a counter-party (mate) that has everything they lack -- with social and physical dominance very, very high up the priority stack. (Women look at the total picture of their mates. Men largely focus on youth, health and beauty. That's why Cinderella could snag her Prince in one evening. Gals move slower, are much more discerning, as they will be committing their bodies and their lives to their babies.) War Machine used cyclic narcissic gambits to push-pull his woman -- and she found it brutal to cut free. He is about as extreme as one can be. But since his ugly tale is out for the world to see, do so. It's illuminating -- and terrifying.

@liamdevine8063 No. He loved his son, HW. The kid was his Golden Child. Then, when HW decided to be his own man, Daniel demoted him to Scapegoat/ Cinderfella. (A classic NPD 'discard.') This is VERY common in dysfunctional families. Study up on NPD. There are a ton of videos on YT about it. Save yourself and ones you love. NPD creeps roam the planet. Without fore knowledge, they're too likely to suck you in to their strange world-view. Plainview = warped view. Natch.

The whole point of Daniel Plainview was that he was the acme of narcissic personality disorder. There are a ton of YT videos that get to the point of DP's personality. It's his NPD that drives EVERYTHING about him. It's not enough that DP win. Even a million is turned down flat. Then he threatens the Standard Oil man's life. (A felony, BTW.) It's that ALL others must be losers if in perceived competition with Daniel Plainview. Of course, his name is ironic, as he lives inside warp-views. Eli Sunday is a con man and embezzler and murder -- something that is only clear after you've left the theater and reflected on his final crossfire with Daniel. His money crisis is real: he has embezzled big time from his own ministry. (1927 Florida boom-bust?) To get leverage on Daniel, Eli murdered a 99-year old man so that control would fall to Eli's pal -- the grandchild, now middle aged. Then Daniel blows up his proposition by telling him that he's been slant-drilling into the critical property -- for years. (drainage of the milkshake) Shakespeare laid it out in Hamlet. One critical fault can define a man. For Daniel Plainview, it's overt narcissism. For Eli Sunday, it's covert narcissism. Study up -- and protect yourself. These creeps are all over planet Earth. Hence, no-one can easily avoid them.
