That's why the Russian plants were so BIG that adding shielding was an economic non-starter. Look how much concrete the Soviets had to use// air drop after the reactor lit off. Carbon pile designs create low quality steam -- 'cold' steam. Still, they are so cheap to create that the Soviets really felt they had a winner and would soon have cheaper juice than the USA -- the land of the. lowest cost electricity in the world -- back then. Due to the Greens, this is no longer true -- and is a major source of rising poverty within the USA. The benefits of ultra-cheap electricity flow overwhelmingly to the poorest citizens of a nation.
