When a cheap modern last is complared to a quality last from say the 1950's the immediate difference noted is the lack of any pronounced arch on the modern one. the width of the sole across the waist is also much larger on the modern last which means there will be no contact with the mid foot and hence no support other than on the outside bottom of the foot. Basically modern shoes for women are garbage because of the poorly shaped last and the lack of width options, for a narrow foot, most shoes are way too broad to have any meaningly support. As far as I know, there are no quality off the shelf shoes available these days, profit being more important for the manufacturer than quality of fit, or fitness for purpose.
