  1. Frame first ship construction didn't appear until the 5th century AD. To make a ship in this period, first a the shape of the hull was dug out in the ground then the planks would be laid up using mortice and tenon joints, finally, the permanent vertical and horizontal frame pieces would be attached on the inside to retain the shape before the hull was lifted out of the ground.
