@thatoldyankeesguy 5.56 is not the best for any one role but it covers most roles well, especially with that new A1 ammo. Penetrates and fragments, loaded for short barrels, real nice.

@thatoldyankeesguy Old timer eh? The Irishman mentions the 6.5 creedmoor, that's one to try. I'd go .300 AAC over 5.56 for up to 350yds; pistol length gas block, shorter barrel for CQ, perfect load of 120gr+ still over 2,200fps (rifle shock), but it loses its charms after 350. In ar10 the 6.5CM is sonic well past 1k, super flat and some are hitting steel around 2500. SOCOM switched to 6.5 For an all-rounder'/recce rifle I'd still go 5.56 with 13.7 inch barrel.
