@what.the..6990 Davy, in his first publication, called it Aluminum. It was the society which wanted Aluminium, not Davy.

@tsopmocful1958 It has to do with conventional Latin naming methods. The society Davy was associated with preferred the added "i", whereas Davy, the man who actually named it, did not.

@SomethingSomethingComplete Most people in the world also use "Bibliotech" and not "Library", and calling it a Bibliotech in the USA or UK would be subjective to the person but objectively incorrect for the language of the country.

@aRandomFox00 You can spell it however you like but the added "i" follows neither the Latin naming conventions nor the man credited with the discovery who has only ever spelled it "aluminum" in scientific publication.

@SomethingSomethingComplete There are a lot of Acadians in the states. People don't always realize the connection; Acadian, Canadian. Got lots of southern Canadians down here with their own backwater versions of French, just like Quebec.

@SomethingSomethingComplete We're off the reserve anyways. Language is standardized. There's US English and UK English. It just so happens that, in this instance, US English matches that of the person credited with the naming. Not a big deal.

Canadians too, so 370+ million people. Count the population of all other countries which have English as their main language. The USA is not the minority.

@Matt_Alaric Let me help you out; The earliest form of English was known as Old English, which was spoken until around the 11th century. Middle English emerged after the Norman Conquest of 1066, and it was spoken until the late 15th century. Modern English began to develop in the 16th century, and it has continued to evolve since then. The English language developed from the West Germanic dialects spoken by the Angles, Saxons, and other Teutonic tribes who participated in the invasion and occupation of England in the fifth and sixth centuries. As a language, Anglo-Saxon, or Old English, was very different from modern English. Good luck, "serious historian" lol.

@eic_phail From IUPAC periodic table; "- 'Aluminum' and 'cesium' are commonly used alternative spellings for 'aluminium' and 'caesium'. Both were accepted by the IUPAC in the 90's and they have several publications with both variants. But nice try.

@SomethingSomethingComplete It does, though. There's a lot of French culture in the states. We even have our own dialect, Creole. They owned the entire landmass west of the colonies before the push west.

@SomethingSomethingComplete So, here's the thing about your argument; it doesn't matter. You're literally trying to discredit Davy and credit someone else. That's way, way beyond the scope of anyone here. The global scientific community credits Davy so you'll have to write a thesis to support that argument.

@ramsesjorenrodrigues619 Just to add to that, IUPAC also accepted Aluminum. They accepted both at the start of the 90's. They publish periodic tables and texts with both spellings, depending on location.

@xerveeon The reasons NASA uses it are for its accuracy but it's far more complex than we're getting into here. Conversions, complex formula, high math which I don't understand. They do have papers about it, if you're interested.
