  1.  @pajamas720  Our defense treaty with Taiwan got cancelled when the PRC took their seat in the UN, 1979. We still maintain a defense/security treaty with Japan. It's not really "by law", but by treaty, the USA is obligated to defend Japan. It has no such obligation towards Taiwan. I mean, there's a good chance that the USA would come to the aid of Taiwan if the illegitimate PRC were to attempt invasion but there's no document to guarantee any such action.

  3. The UN runs on a system of voting, mostly surrounding the permanent member states. When the vote came up to replace Taiwan's (ROC) seat in the UN with the PRC, the USA proposed seating both the PRC and Taiwan.

  4.  @pajamas720  That's with Japan. The USA is obligated to defend Japan due to removing disbanding their military at the end of WW2.
