I think that was before Russia peppered the whole of the eastern border with mines themselves. I've been to Cambodia and Iraq where there are minefields everywhere, I understand the dangers and consequences they cause, but in this case to prevent invasion and repeats of Bucha atrocities they are warranted. It is possible to make mines where the explosive component breaks down though dispersion of gas making them inert, this type of explosives is used in oil and gas exploration

I'm not saying it's okay to used anti-personnel mines but if they are using DBX explosives in the US supplied landmines then they release fumes after a time period, the fumes are result of a reaction which neutralises the nitroglycerine and the explosive effectively turns to a clay line compound. Very different to the French, Russian, Chinese and Brazilian made mines which stay line almost indefinitely.
