The 47 had a state of the art turbo supercharger. The R 2800 was no where as good in other planes. Its one of the reasons the plane is so big. The supercharger takes up a lot of space. The 2800 was used as a stop gap in B 26 and was not very good. It was designed to have a more powerful engine but they were not available going to the B 29.

@petesheppard1709 Gregg put out a vid yesterday on the B 26 using that engine and detailed how sub par it was in that application. I don't think of him as God but he gets into a lot of the legends and clarifies them. He did a simulator where he was in a 47 fighting a 190 and he had a rather easy time bringing down the German. I always assumed the 47 was a lousy fighter but that is apparently not the case. It probably has fairly reasonable wing loading. It was just so different than any other countries planes.

In high altitude configuration it was the fastest production plane of WWII. It could out turn a FW 190.
9
It was bigger than a Heinkel 111. The standard German bomber.

@petesheppard1709 See Greggs review of the B 26 from yesterday. It was designed to go over 400 mph and outrun fighters. It had the low drag, low lift Davis wing. The problem was they could'nt get the designed engine due to the war and could only get the low power R 2800. It could barely clear 300 mph which was a small improvement of the older B 25. The B 25 flew like a baby buggy, the 26 was twitchy and dangerous for the novice pilot due to the low lift wing. They added wing length to try to help but it was all designed for 400 mph not 300. Otherwise it was a great design. Something like a big load carrying Mosquito.

The razorbacks are unpleasant looking. The Ds look great. It was derived from the p 36.

@petesheppard1709 They did'nt have any gas.

They were used in South America at least through the 50s.

I have a picture of me standing next to the Confed AF P 47. Its huge. By comparison their ME 109 is about the size of my dads Piper. The Germans would say their canons are better than the 50 cal. Don't know why the RAF stuck to .303s. They could have easily ordered up a bunch of 50s.

They escorted bombers almost from the first but usually could not go all the way. The drops tanks were British designed and manufactured. The Americans felt no need of them till the B 17s started falling like dead leaves.

@jacktattis I don't know, I have no interest in video games. Now I don't remember if he was fighting a 109 or a 190. He said it would make a big difference in a P 47. It could out turn one but not the other. Also these German fighters were developed all through the war so a late mark vs. an early mark were two different things.

@lqr824 All Navy planes were low altitude, thats where the boats are, sea level. All had simple forced induction systems and were crap at high altitude.

@petesheppard1709 How did the British do it?

@forbolden See Greggs vid on the B 26. I'm tired of answering questions for him.

@goobfilmcast4239 It was definitely Confederate when I was at Harlengen in the 70s. They found out enthusiasts with money come from all over the world.

The TA 152 was slightly faster but it was experimental.

Those little German planes would disintegrate or explode when hit by 8 50s. AP and HE. The Germans used canons against the bombers. Longer range, more explosive. I always heard the best advice for a fighter pilot was get right on the enemys tail, preferably when he does'nt know you are there then blast him. Don't get cute or fancy.

A lot of WWII planes had control problems with compressability in a dive. Apparently the jug did'nt. My dad told me a story of one hitting a brick apartment building in Germany. The pilot survived.

@huck69 My bad.

@scootergeorge7089 Modern jets are much larger.

@apersondoingthings5689 Just quoting Greggs extensive research. I think a TU 95 will do 525. Turbo prop.

My understanding is pilots, then and now, hate ground attack. Too dangerous. My friend flew A 10s. To attack a tank they get above it on 4 compass points then all dive straight down at the tank. They exit on a steep pull up. Saw my friend do this at an air show. He is now a retired airline pilot.

@jimsleestak8012 The Marines used it in the Pacific. Rhubarb missions in Europe were more aimed at trains and ground transportation. Marines often used napalm. B 17 cas in europe was a disaster. See COBRA.

Apparently it did real well against German fighters. A lot more nimble than I had previously thought. As they said once they got the right propeller it was as good as any. They also say P 40 was no good but it shot down a lot of ME 109s.

My steel frame Ninja 1000 weighs 600 pounds. The alloy frame bikes weigh less but I would guess at least 500 pounds.
