  1. My understanding is that the whole reason why Cornwallis was at Yorktown was to be evacuated by the British fleet. The French fleet made that impossible and he was trapped in a seige he could'nt win. I think then a little later the British hit the French hard.

  2. I am thinking a square stern has different effects depending on designed speed. The same issue is present on square back cars or planes. A streamlined back might be more efficient at lower speeds but present more wetted surface area at higher speeds, essentually parasite drag. Bullets and rockets generally have square back ends. This results in a vacume as these high speed objects move through the air but possibly more laminar flow until the fluid separation point is reached. In high speed objects it could decrease random laminar flow separation and lead to more controlability or a straighter flight path. Older cars like XKEs have streamlined backs, newer ones tend to have cam backs. The streamlining does present more surface area.
