Yeah but then they put batteries in the counters.

Yes it surprised me you had to have permission to go to the museum but they let me in. I mostly remember the V2 as it was surprising to me. Very large extremely complicated. Did'nt look like something from the 1940s. Once they let me through the gate nobody paid any attention to me. Tried to see the boneyard at Davis Monthan. They said it would take a week to get FBI clearance. I thought it was a joke to see a bunch of scrap metal and was'nt happy. I think they take bus tours now.

There are Titan missle site tours in various places.

One bomb malfunctioned in the south pacific and spread plutonium everywhere. They sent a bunch of dopes out to pick up the pieces by hand and put them in a hole. They covered the hole with concrete. The site is now going under water due to sea level rise. DOD has known about it for decades but has'nt spent the money to clean it up. The guys who were exposed are some of the many who can't get the government to pay their health costs. The plutonium will spread into the ocean.

Grew up in Independence. Grade schoolers would tour the museum. He would meet us at the front door. His house was in walking distance so he hung out at the library. My dad got him to autograph one of his books. My dad hated Truman. I am guessing I will inherit the book which is now worth something. In Independence anything which did not move was named Truman. I remember the big battleship Missouri model given by the Japanese.

@robinwells8879 They keep revising downward dental xray exposures. X ray machines from the 20s are definitely not safe. Radiation has cumulative effects. Space ships are not shielded but they calculate astronauts will not be exposed long enough to get cancer. They also calculate that people will not have any more kids, ie birth defects, and are old enough they will die before effects become manifest. I keep hearing disturbing stories about people on nuclear subs getting cancer. The military is not particularly concerned with your health. Many bases are hazardous waste dumps. Davis Monthan is poisoning Tuscons water supply.

More were killed in thermite bombings of Tokyo, Dresden and others. Of course the Nazis gassed 6 million. Stallin killed 36 million Russians.
2
See ERB One in Idaho. A great stop. Like a nuclear reactor designed by kids.

Some of the wealthiest areas in the country are in the Detroit area. The city has lost several hundred thousand in population from its peak. Some have said its their favorite place to visit.

When I was at the VLA there was'nt a damn thing around there. Roswell was a dying ghost town. Thats the closest thing I can remember. It was by a real ghost town called Chloride.
2
Yeah but it was a dry heat.
1
Yeah its a dump. Just a military base.

The Army exposed troops to above ground explosions in the 50s. They had a nuclear bazooka called Honest John which advised you to dig a fox hole and get in before firing. They never gave a damn about the troops.

There is a state park or something next to the site. I tented overnight in early spring. I expected rattlesnakes all over the place but it was kind of cool and saw none. The sign saying they are active all year has now upset me several years later.

Granite is radioactive. So is radon in your house.
1
So is coal.

Take Elons light speed bus. Assuming it does'nt go belly up with Twitter.
1
It was fat people day. They were giving out atomic donuts.
1
@rogerthat4545 Naw. Actually they are for dim witted stiffs with superiority complexes.

@RadioactiveDrew There are tours of Mercury Nevada. There is a big concrete cylinder which was at ground level before a test and now is like 15 feet above ground level. Several test sites, some of them hot and restricted. See Wonderhussy if you want a look. She did most of them.

@Paul26525 Some one crossed the boundary some time ago and was shot.
1
@RadioactiveDrew Is it beta radiation? Any gamma?
1
@jamesb.9155 Try Chernobyl.

@robinwells8879 Well you read about the burn pits at area 51 and the guys who have been poisoned and my conclusion is that the base commander orders this shit. Why? well because he is given no proper disposal and told the RAM or what ever is top secret and must be destroyed. So its a command failure. EPA and OSHA rules should apply every where even at the alien repository. But the Pentagon does'nt want the expense and they don't want civilians poking around in top secret installations. That would be my read. Of course its pure negligence. Of course walking troops toward nuclear explosions in the desert is hardly responsible. Any more than feeding them poisoned water at Camp LeJeune. I hear of radiation induced cancer in nuclear subs.
1
@RadioactiveDrew Yeah thats where the base commander keeps his cold beer. Surprised deadly force was'nt authorized.

Battleships had up to 16 inch thick casings many times larger. Modern tank armor is something like 5 inches thick.
1
@willb6070 What is it Hanford that has all the problems? Is'nt that in WA? I think people have died there.
1
@lokihowell7492 My understanding is its been under clean up for decades and they have a lot more to do.
1
@billroberts9182 The nukes were created for Germany. They surrendered before they could be used. Japanese intransigence brought them down on them. Fire bombings killed many more.
1
@AcmeRacing The Japanese had one professor doing some book work on nuclear energy. They were not in the same leaque as Germany, US, UK. They killed lots of POWs with biological weapons.
1
Several crators at Mercury, NV.

I was at ERB one in idaho, a decommisioned nuclear reactor. They required you wear shoes and said the radiation would not penetrate the soles of the shoes. It was extremely simple and informative. They may have had the experimental NASA nuclear rockets there. I'm not sure.
1
@RadioactiveDrew Were those the NASA rockets? I never knew.
