Most of any big settlement goes to the lawyers by pretrial contract. I worked with one whose kid got the death sentence and the lawyer made the parents execute a mortgage on their house for defense payment. The kid got a PD after that ran out and was executed in the MO. gas chamber. Don't worry, he deserved it.
