  2. Was work ever done on cooling naval gun barrels? With increases in firing rate this started being an issue and certainly was one by the time of dual purpose guns in WWII. It never happened but it would be surprising if there were no studies done. I an not certain if it's even possible to do on a recoiling gun, but I'm an accountant not an engineer..
