@yeegordon8285 you are trying to judge 17 century's people from 21 century's people's point of view. At that time opium wasn't banned, wasn't even recognized as so dangerous. So Englishmen just cunningly made an irresistible offer. China wanted to collect gold and silver inside the country, to become richest and powerful. It's as if someone opened a store to sell goods, but absolutely refused to buy something from other stores even those stores' goods could be useful, wanting their owners just to give him all their money to just bankrupt them. It wasn't about China didn't need anything from other countries, it was about it refused other countries to sell something on it's territory, and thinking that it outsmarted others. But whoops -- smartest was outsmarted and outpowered, how unusual! How could this happen, hmm? Of course, it all wasn't and isn't fair -- both sides doings, so we should just make it a lesson for ourselves to not do alike, but that is as it is -- our (whole world's nation's) ancestors were not so totally kind and good people.
