He only won in the battleground states by some 70 thousand votes and lost the popular vote by more than 3 million votes (if you include 3rd party candidates in your total). The Russians gave him a massive boost by hacking and distributing material from DNC servers and emails. The Russian government also executed a massive pro-Trump propaganda campaign in social media designed to limit electoral participation of targeted groups (voter suppression). The impact of all of this foreign activity was enough to allow a man who is grossly unqualified to win a national election by the skin of his teeth
