Straight As in dumbed down Britain are the equivalent of straight Ds forty years ago. Although the real terms pay of doctors in Europe may not have declined as much their pay is still well below that of their British counterparts because they were paid so much more to begin with. You must be economically illiterate not to appreciate that inflation is higher in the UK which has a knock on effect on buying power. The UK produces some of the most poorly educated, badly trained doctors in the world as Australia is now finding out to its cost. Singaporean doctors working in the UK were aghast at the lack of knowledge and poor levels of understanding evident in the new breed of dumbed down British medics.

This comprehensive school pupil studying for A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, English and Geography applied to study medicine at Oxford university. After she was interviewed and rejected the then chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown interfered with the selection process citing ‘elitism’ because she didn’t go to a private school. Oxford dismissed his claims. This was in 2000 which is 23 years ago. I am therefore somewhat sceptical about your assertion that Physics and/or Maths and/or Further Maths are ‘what you need to get in’ in 2023. Although it used to be a prerequisite which effectively sorted the sheep from the goats my understanding is that “goats” are now permitted to become doctors in dumbed down Britain.

So his sub inflation 6% pay rise of £60,000 amounts to a very substantial £58,400 real terms pay increase.

@gigi6539 these days anyone of average intelligence can get a place at a British medical school; the huge expansion of medical schools across the UK over the past 30 years inevitably led to a drop in quality as the quantity of medical students ballooned and entry requirements were dumbed down.

Doctors are so dumb these days they don’t understand the difference between RPI and CPI hence they say their pay has fallen by 26% in real terms when it has only fallen by a maximum of 16%.

US consultants pay for their own education and don’t fall back on the nanny state like their British counterparts. They also have to take out expensive professional liability insurance and can’t fall back on taxpayers to pay compensation for their clinical negligence and associated legal fees like their British counterparts. They are also highly educated, properly trained and competent unlike their British counterparts. Dumbed down British doctors would never clear the interview.
