  7.  @Simulacra719  Pupils in comprehensive schools were streamed according to their aptitude. The majority did CSEs and left school at 16. A minority did O-levels which were the gateway to A-levels and then possibly university or polytechnic. There was no dumbing down until Thatcher abolished the elite O-level and introduced the watered down ‘one size fits all’ GCSE in 1988.
