  2. Of course the Americans had to go bigger and faster than Concorde. The thing is the faster you go, the hotter the plane gets. The Concorde designers knew this and restricted the speed to be able to use Aluminium. The Americans were forced to use Titanium to achieve their one-upmanship, greatly increasing cost. Add to this the swing wing idea that added weight and complexity the Boeing idea was never going to fly as a commercial aircraft. They would have know this from the start so it was a cynical drain on public funds for something they knew would never be viable.

  3. Another one for you. Abbotsford landslide - Dunedin - 1979 (New Zealand) Saw the aftermath on the way to school. The suburb ended up on my club's Football (soccer) fields so we had to relocate. Destroyed quite a number of houses and the Orchard Sun Club (nudist colony)

  7. There is always a demand from the public for barriers even on obscure crossings after these types of accidents. However, the sign says STOP. A driver that stops and looks will not be hit by a train. After all do we see barrier arms on major road intersections?
