Of course the Americans had to go bigger and faster than Concorde. The thing is the faster you go, the hotter the plane gets. The Concorde designers knew this and restricted the speed to be able to use Aluminium. The Americans were forced to use Titanium to achieve their one-upmanship, greatly increasing cost. Add to this the swing wing idea that added weight and complexity the Boeing idea was never going to fly as a commercial aircraft. They would have know this from the start so it was a cynical drain on public funds for something they knew would never be viable.
