Tipping is discouraged in New Zealand as we have a decent minimum wage. Tourists sometimes say prices are high dining out etc. The price listed is what you pay. No tips, all taxes too are included in the price.

@ When GST was introduced one hardware chain displayed non GST prices. When I got to the counter to pay for a power tool I was told GST extra. I left it, walked out and bought elsewhere. I can't have been the only one as they quickly changed the pricing to include GST. Some trade only places have non GST prices but is clearly marked and usually has GST inclusive price displayed too.

@I don't agree. If you are going to be paying $150 for the item then just display that. Perhaps you don't like paying tax but I like having free services like education and health care. Well not quite. My medication costs me $10 a month but I am getting a free CT scan in a couple of weeks.

@Johnnie-d9b A lot of that is high cost of housing fuelled by speculation. It took off in the early 2000's but the govt didn't introduce a capital gains tax until ~2018 when the horse had bolted.
