NASA made it compulsory after a couple of very expensive failures. They had allowed contractors to use imperial so long as conversions were done but found out that mistakes are too easily missed.

The "Pink Slime" and food products manufactured from corn.... A lot of US food products are banned in the EU for good reason.

I would feel ill at the thought of him visiting.

Can you keep the same number though?

@SirAntoniousBlock You should really try being less offensive. Turning your CAPS lock off would be a start.

@tonyjesshope6861 Still lacks the convenience of keeping your number.

A couple of points. The UK is a small part of NZ exports and has to meet strict animal welfare standards to export to the other markets (including the EU). Those standards are world leading. Shipping. The bulk shipping cost per kg by sea is small. The biggest cost is the local distribution loop. In any case the containers work both ways. Here is an opportunity for UK manufacturers to take advantage of the shipping to Australia and NZ

@trident6547 It may be pre-packaged and put in boxes but filling a container completely with a single product then filling a whole container ship with said containers justifies using the term shipping in bulk. I used the term to differentiate between bulk and discrete shipments. With the pandemic causing supply chain issues NZ meat exporters have even resorted to private hire of ships to ensure timely deliveries.

@SirAntoniousBlock Sorry. I thought we were attempting an intelligent discussion. Are you Australian?

Imperial measurements in Engineering is a headache. NASA notably went primarily metric approx 20 years ago when there were some very expensive mistakes made. Mars climate orbiter in 1999 and others. Are there any car makers that don't use metric? Even my 1945 Austin uses metric wheel bearings. Metric bearings use a standardised system so are cheaper to buy and easier to obtain. The persistence of using imperial for road speed etc is just belligerence. I am in New Zealand where all measurements were changed at once in 1976 when I was half way through school. I work as an Engineer and some of our gear is old, so a lot of old legacy imperial stuff. Thank goodness for digital calipers and calculators.

40 or 50 years ago exports to the UK from New Zealand were the bulk of the exports from NZ. Now the UK is a minor customer. The EU put up a lot of barriers to NZ so NZ looked elsewhere to sell meat and produce. The advantage of dealing with NZ and Australia is that they are used to dealing with the bureaucracy of import/export and will have the procedures in place. Tim Tams are quite nice. We can get them here in NZ (from OZ)

@epincion The UK still has a greater emphasis on manufactured goods than NZ and so NZ has things the UK produces. Where the head office is is irrelevant. FIAT/Chrysler has head office in London but factories in Italy/ USA and elsewhere. ps I simply mentioned they tasted nice and implied no more than that. No doubt they are made elsewhere under license. It shows the Brexiteers are trying to turn the clock back to the British empire days and that is an unrealistic fantasy. Th NZ exporters can still trade with EU as it always has but now has the advantage over the UK which is in a weak trading position. The transport distance is irrelevant as there are far more resources used in transporting the goods locally in the UK than is used getting them (per Kg) from NZ to the UK.
