Perhaps it breaks because it accelerated fast?

The words are "Engine Brake". In any case the way it works is the motors can become generators and take energy which is put back into the battery. In regular Brakes the energy is lost as heat.

@ Think about it. If an electric vehicles motor can accelerate it. It can decelerate it just as well. Any energy going back to the battery is energy not having to dissipated by the brakes. I built an e-bike with regen braking 10 years ago. It is still on its original pads as on the hills the region is enough to hold the speed. It is done with software. You set the speed. If the motor runs faster it acts as a generator. A matter of scale but the principle is the same. You don't need a separate transmission. Regular brakes generate a lot of heat and regular engine braking absorbs and dissipates heat too. Not arguing about viability of the semi is for long haul as that wasn't part of the original post and I agree. Not a fan of Tesla.

@Motocentrick Just like regular trucks then? Bear in mind I was responding to your original post. "The other thing they don't mention is that electric cars don't engine break.(sic) You would have to ride your trucks brakes all the way down mountain, and they would overheat and light on fire"

@ehudv9276 It would be a shame for all that engineering expertise to go to waste. Hopefully it will get bought out by another auto manufacturer when the share price reaches a realistic value. It makes no sense when Toyota is valued a lot less yet makes more profit.
