The bore & piston wear was minimal but the rings were worn to half their original thickness. A new set of rings was all that was required. It may have some benefits but I am skeptical of claims of any improvement in efficiency.

  11. The Esprit S2 is quite civilised in regular traffic. The Dellortos make the engine well behaved across the rev range. Power is more like 160bhp in UK trim but torque is quite good. Routine maintenance items are cheap as they come off common models. I have had mine 17 years and not had the motor out yet.

  39. The fuel demand regardless of whether the engine has fuel injection or carb is dictated by the engine. The carburettor is just a mechanical fuel metering device. The engine demands a certain amount of air and the carb delivers the appropriate amount of fuel to match the air flow via appropriate jets in the carb. This gives the optimum fuel/air ratio. The throttle controls the air flow, not the fuel flow. The best that these sorts of devices can hope to achieve is a more complete combustion of the available fuel /air mixture but the clean plugs and pistons indicate the engines are already achieving close to complete combustion.

  41. I had an HPE VX for 13 years as my everyday driver. One of the last, registered in 1985. The later models had the bonus of galvanised shells so no rust issues. A great reliable car. Made a good tow car with lots of torque in the mid range. Its happy range was 1800-4000rpm. The secret of the gear change is to get the right oil. Took it on track days at Ruapuna. Curiously for a FWD car it breaks in to oversteer on the limit. The way to counter this is to put the foot flat. A lot of fun. Brake hard, provoke a little oversteer and drift out of the corner under power. The car had 320,000km on it and was still going strong. The car is still on the road with the new owner. I sold it as my wife wanted a more practical 5 door car. I got a FIAT Stilo Abarth. Looking at selling that after 12 years. It has been a solid reliable car too. Track day next week.... Its replacement is an older car. A Rover Tomcat. Less practical and the wife doesn't like it but she lets me have my toys.🥰 Had a cool plate on it too "HPE VX"

However the fact that they have built full prototypes and yet cannot produce basic operation data such as the heat rejection of the panels makes me suspicious. Along with the all the buzz works in leu of real data. Some data for you. Our main cooling tower rejects heat of 4MW. It has a 40m2 footprint. That is 100kW per m2. When we have that offline we use a dam to radiate the heat. It is only capable of 400w per m2. This system I suspect will be similar. That means this system will be 250 times the size. The cost will be astronomical compared to a cooling tower and in any case what are the real advantages? Evaporative cooling works just fine (except in high humidity)

This system is poor at generating torque to turn the camshaft. The offset from the center of the rotation is small compared to a steam loco arrangement.

Going the other way still requires high energy input. For example a heat pump is efficient but requires a high energy input to drive the compressor. As I said, the extensive use of buzz words eg nano anything, rings alarm bells. I look after a 5MW heat pump. To direct that amount of energy out in to space by means described does not seem plausible. At the moment I am overseeing a 5MW experimental hot water heat pump heating system so I am familiar with the mathematics and thermodynamics involved.

  102. I got the car cheap because it had 87 errors on the computer. It turned out all that was wrong was a loose battery clamp and a cheap battery. Fitting a new clamp and decent battery solved the problem.

If it was significant then the piston the the wear in a conventional piston would be very high. This is not the case. For the claims of the efficiency to be so good then the thermodynamic efficiency would have to be much better. As it uses the same cycle as a conventional engine then the starting point for the efficiency is the same. Whether Otto or Diesel cycle. So yes it will work. Yes the piston design reduces piston friction but this won't improve efficiency as the promoter claims.

  112. It is quicker and cheaper to make steel bodies in mass production. Stamping a steel panel is quick compared to laying up and curing fibre-glass. Also panel fit can take a bit more fettling to get right with fibre-glass. Repairs are actually quite easy. Glass fibre and resin to effect a permanent repair. Easier than welding and filling a steel body. I have restored a Lotus Esprit as well as built a couple of kits.

USA made it a requirement in 1996 but in New Zealand for example,it was not compulsory until 2006 As a result some companies such as GM deliberately made their cars non compliant (allegedly) so that you had to go to the dealer. GM exported cars to the USA and Europe before 2006 and these cars would have had to be OBD2 compliant. It is an interesting fact that one can get an ODB2 cable in NZ to fit a GM car and it just required swapping a couple of wires to make it work.

The Concorde designers knew this and restricted the speed to be able to use Aluminium. The Americans were forced to use Titanium to achieve their one-upmanship, greatly increasing cost. Add to this the swing wing idea that added weight and complexity the Boeing idea was never going to fly as a commercial aircraft. They would have know this from the start so it was a cynical drain on public funds for something they knew would never be viable.

  169. I work for a New Zealand exporter. We still export to EU and UK is still just going to follow the same rules as it makes no sense to reinvent the wheel. It just means more bureaucrats and paperwork. On a personal note I have been getting car parts from the UK for many years. Parts that took a week to arrive 10 years ago now takes 3 months. Similar parts from EU or USA arrive in 2 weeks.

  218. Had one as a student car to commute and it was great. I learnt to fix it after a poor repair by a shop. The head gasket needed repair which they repaired. The exhaust fell off 2 days later and they claimed it was because the car vibrates so much. Rather than argue I figured how hard can it be? The rear cover easily lifts off so you don't need to reach over it when servicing.... One trolley jack. Disconnecting stuff and unbolt rear panel below the hatch, then just roll the complete engine transmission out the rear. Took 1/2 hour and it was my first car repair attempt. Found shop had stripped the exhaust bolts so removed head for repair. Also found shop had put head gasket on wrong way. Fixed anything that needed it and it did great service. It was durable and reliable. I found also it had later engine big bore fitted (700cc) so had no trouble on the motorway at 65mph. My current FIAT has several computers and got it cheap due to having 89 error codes up. I figured voltage issue and sure enough worn battery clamp. $5 later down to 8 error codes. I noticed previous owner had fitted small cheap battery. Put in correct one and all codes cleared. Have picked up several cheap FIATs over the years and invariably the faults have been down to poor & incorrect maintenance. Once fixed properly I have found them reliable cars. I miss my 500...

  256. Our story. I had just bought a tidy Toyota (private sale) By coincidence my wife got a free service for a Toyota via a mystery shopper scheme. This is where chain stores, franchises etc pay you or provide free goods or service in return for a report on the service one received. So Toyota paid us to get a service from the dealer and report back. What happened. Service done. Car nice and clean. A week later I was driving it and noticed the annual inspection was not due next January as I thought but was in fact 6 months overdue. I booked it in to AA and it failed on a very loose wheel bearing. I was able to do that myself but was less than pleased that it had not been picked up on the service. So I went to speak to the service manager. He explained they simply do oil change and grease and the car is not inspected. It is up to the owner to note when the inspection is due (the new oil sticker had been placed next to the inspection sticker) As I normally do my own oil changes and check the vehicle at the same time I was outraged. The invoice stated the mechanic had spent 1.5 hours on car. So I said "$250 for basically and oil change and valet?" The office girl was trying not to laugh at seeing her boss squirm. Needless to say it was all detailed in report to Toyota. A year later.... Booked in again for service via the mystery shopper scheme. What a difference. The car came back with a detailed inspection sheet with all safety items ticked off and noted. Even the timing belt due soon was noted. Glowing report to Toyota.

I was annoyed that they had missed safety items and charged us a large sum for an oil/filter change and valet as it was I vehicle I had bought for my wife. I went to see the service manager and gave him a piece of my mind. The report went to Toyota. Next service was totally different. An itemised check list and much more thorough check of the vehicle.   372. I have 10 vehicles. The newest is a 2004 FIAT bought in 2012. It has been a reliable car but is getting high in mileage and being the Abarth performance model spares are becoming scarcer. The FIAT was a learning curve as my first vehicle with computers and canbus. However it has proven not bad to work with. I even had to do a coil but for that car it was simply a matter of replacing the one coil. I did note that the other 4 had been done so perhaps replacing as a set is a good idea? (yes, 5 cylinder car) The message on the dash though was " Imminent Engine Management Failure. Return to Dealer" I thought BS. Just a misfire, will check when I get home. I bought it's replacement 6 months ago for $2500 and spent $5000 getting it right. A 1996 Rover that had been off the road since 2007. So getting an older car (with low miles). It has a basic computer (that I have the cable for which even works with Linux). I was able to replace a part by drawing on my computer and 3D printing it. As you say the new car repairs are quickly getting expensive and obsolete fast. The right to repair is going to be an issue. Watch for government behaviour there. I have drifted towards older British cars as support for them is good.

  383. @ Think about it. If an electric vehicles motor can accelerate it. It can decelerate it just as well. Any energy going back to the battery is energy not having to dissipated by the brakes. I built an e-bike with regen braking 10 years ago. It is still on its original pads as on the hills the region is enough to hold the speed. It is done with software. You set the speed. If the motor runs faster it acts as a generator. A matter of scale but the principle is the same. You don't need a separate transmission. Regular brakes generate a lot of heat and regular engine braking absorbs and dissipates heat too. Not arguing about viability of the semi is for long haul as that wasn't part of the original post and I agree. Not a fan of Tesla.

Shipping. The bulk shipping cost per kg by sea is small. The biggest cost is the local distribution loop. In any case the containers work both ways. The first rotor is a low compression engine and the second a high compression. The gases are compressed in 2 stages and then expanded in 2 stages. Bear in mind the engine I described was a high performance 4 cylinder supercharged engine. I had the engine out for a transmission issue and inspected the engine due to it's mileage. Waiting until rings break is unwise as it can damage piston and bore. As it was I had 10 years trouble free motoring after doing the job.

A car that only does short journeys where the engine is cycling temperature wise will not last as long as an engine doing highway cruising where it is up to temperature most of the time and under steady load. Maintenance and using the correct lubricants affects longevity but also the conditions under which it is operating. For example a small engine will do better for short running than a larger engined car as it heats up much quicker. This reduces wear and better gas mileage.

(in an engine with no losses) Piston friction only represents a small amount of losses in engine. If it was significant the piston would not last long.

When the pistons are replaced is is because the engine is rebored to a larger size due to the rings wearing the bore rather than the pistons being worn. Going back to my original post. The piston friction and even ring friction is minor. The only way the efficiency of the engine significantly is to increase its thermodynamic efficiency. This can be done just as easily with a conventional engine. The basic parameters to consider are the bore, stroke (and their ratio) and the compression ratio which is limited by the octane rating of the fuel. I have balanced crankshafts but most of my balancing experience has been with helicopter gyros.

  481.  @TheLUKONZEN  The heat generated from piston friction is a tiny fraction of the heat generated from thermodynamic losses. For example a 100kW motor generates 300kW of losses at 25% efficiency. Apply 300kW of energy to a piston and it won't just cause it wear you will have a molten pool.

On census day they may put a religion they were born in to (like my father who hasn't been to church for 50 years puts Anglican) My mother is the only one in our family that still attends the Anglican church. I am in a town of 12000. The local Anglican church would struggle to fill the pews on a Sunday. The Catholics do a little better but still facing falling numbers. Many of the small villages in the area have closed their churches and remaining few travel in, so that makes the situation look worse for the religions as they still can't fill the pews. According to the census the numbers are Anglican 6% Roman Catholic 8% Presbyterian 5% Other Christian 6% Hindu 2% Islam 1% Now 6% of 12000 is 720 and there is no way the Anglicans are getting that level of support. These days the numbers for the individual churches has dropped below the point where they enjoy any political power or influence.

Dunedin, New Zealand which has steepest street in the world.(didn't test 500 on that) Later fitted a big bore kit to it that improved performance.   516. An option for a DIY dip is to use a cheap swimming pool just big enough for car. Get a 200liter drum of molasses from a stock food supplier. Mix with 2000 liter of water in pool. Submerge car in pool (may do half at a time) Takes 3 weeks but will dissolve all rust and just needs rinse and dry. No toxic chemicals. My brother did this with Austin 8 van. Worked well

  521. To be fair it depends a lot on the tyres. A friend with a diesel modern Nissan got stuck returning my tandem trailer to my paddock. Even with trailer removed he was still stuck even with fancy electronic traction aids. I towed him out with my 60 year old Landrover. I then towed the tandem trailer in to the padock easily. The Nissans tyres were clogged easily so were as useful as slicks. The Landrovers traditional cleated tyres tackled the mud with ease.

  536. Imperial measurements in Engineering is a headache. NASA notably went primarily metric approx 20 years ago when there were some very expensive mistakes made. Mars climate orbiter in 1999 and others. Are there any car makers that don't use metric? Even my 1945 Austin uses metric wheel bearings. Metric bearings use a standardised system so are cheaper to buy and easier to obtain. The persistence of using imperial for road speed etc is just belligerence. I am in New Zealand where all measurements were changed at once in 1976 when I was half way through school. I work as an Engineer and some of our gear is old, so a lot of old legacy imperial stuff. Thank goodness for digital calipers and calculators.

The big tank in the rear of the fuselage will need to be balanced by one in the front. Attempting to trim the plane with flying surfaces rather than weight transfer is asking for trouble.

One cannot just trim out a COG problem with the rear stabiliser. It will cause increased drag and reduce effectiveness. Even aircraft such as Airbus 320 have a tank in the tail, the purpose of which is to trim the aircraft. Concordes COG would move 2m in flight requiring 20 tonnes of fuel fore and aft when transitioning between super and sub-sonic speeds.

  553. 40 or 50 years ago exports to the UK from New Zealand were the bulk of the exports from NZ. Now the UK is a minor customer. The EU put up a lot of barriers to NZ so NZ looked elsewhere to sell meat and produce. The advantage of dealing with NZ and Australia is that they are used to dealing with the bureaucracy of import/export and will have the procedures in place. Tim Tams are quite nice. We can get them here in NZ (from OZ)
