The fact that racism is one of the biggest hurdles is shown by when the Republican party was for suffrage of Black Americans, they passed "free college" [and, as today, the white opposition fought it fiercely]. The first Senate bill to fund free public colleges and universities in every state was by Republican SenatorĀ Justin S. Morrill of Vermont. "...one of the most significant pieces of wartime legislation. First proposed when Morrill was serving in the House of Representatives, the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1862 set aside federal lands to create colleges to ā€œbenefit the agricultural and mechanical arts.ā€ The president signed the bill into law on July 2, 1862."

There's 263 legislators caucusing with Democrats, meaning that despite progressive liberals being only 15-20% of Democratic voters, we get progressive legislation passed in the House often -- it just [rarely] makes it through Congress. The legislative agenda of Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris are aligned over 90% of the time. Making "gooder" the enemy of the good is a progressive pastime, but it is as counterproductive politically as are two other pastimes we share with most of the left, underestimating our collective strength and overestimating our bloc strength, and undercutting our own victories with our trademark reflexive cynicism and historical ignorance of prior progress.
