The interpretation of "a well regulated militia" made by Scalia's majority ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller of 2008 has caused a dangerous uptick in gun deaths in the US, increasing 17% in 8 years between 2008 and 2016 and haven't stopped climbing since. Trump/Republican legalizing large mags and increasing loopholes on both the manufacture and sale of firearms, plus the pandemic and other factors decreasing both the psychological welfare and the standard of living for many in the US also contributed to another major uptick over the past 3 years It's almost as if it was decided based upon a flawed premise and the result is that the five fundamental freedoms (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and the right to petition the government) are all being increasingly infringed upon by the far too unregulated firearms in the hands of individuals with no function whatsoever as part of a militia preserving local self-determination from centralized tyranny.

@jessicalucero3271 - More to the point, how many were able to get a gun because of Republicans' fealty to the gun industry[?]

@V03 - Threadbare talking points straight out of the NRA isn't a rational rebuttal to the fact that strengthening gun laws and closing loopholes -- as is supported by the majority of the public and has been passed into bills by Democrats over a dozen times as Republicans refuse to even debate them -- is wholly consistent with, even arguably a requisite of, Scalia's ruling. "Justice Antonin Scalia's opinion for the majority provided Second Amendment protection for commonly used and popular handguns but not for atypical arms or arms used for unlawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns."

@Wedge-Antilles - Those who rationalize needless death with pablum are a sorry lot.

@jessicalucero3271 - No need to make it easier when the proposals on the table are supported by the majority and merely strengthen ing existing laws and expand others to close loopholes. None of which challenges the Constitution's 2nd Amendment protections, including those derived from the DC v Heller ruling.

@V03 - Apparently you don't know stats. It's been known for a while now that the Republican party is out of step with the pubic on gun laws, including their constituents. Justice Scalia is even opposed to current Republican doctrine: "“We also recognize another important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms. ‘Miller’ said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those ‘in common use at the time.’ 307 U.S., at 179, 59 S.Ct. 816. We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of ‘dangerous and unusual weapons.’" "2 in 3 support stricter gun control laws" "70 percent of Republicans, said they are for banning assault-style weaponsEight-in-10 likewise said they favor a federal database to track all gun sales." "Most polls show that as high as eight-in-10 Americans have told the pollsters they favor bans on assault weapons, high-capacity ammunition magazines and “bump stocks,”
