However, they get outsize influence over the rhetoric because they distract all Americans -- but especially their voters -- from the actual policy decisions made by Republican leaders. The Republican party caters to white nationalists in order to get out the vote, but they govern for oligarchs -- just as in Russia and other ethno-nationalist ruled countries.
