The low growth in the UK has meant that the defence budget has been cut to pay for inexorable increases of social spending without increasing taxes. Britain has pitiful Armed Forces, and the stocks of weapons being given to Ukraine will never be replaced.

The police is safe employment with a pension (and if you don't rock the boat you get bumped up a rank six months before retiring). The job of a cop is to provide for his family .

It was not just under his tenure that the Defence budget was raided for social spending without raising taxes, but he certainly did not rock the boat and the UK military is now no longer taken seriously by the US

Would Russia accept a conventional defeat in Ukraine they way they did in Afghanistan? We surely would need to know before we gave Ukraine the wherewithal to conventionally defeat Russia
