American taxpayers never wanted to foot the bill for European defence (and indirectly social spending). Europeans still want Americans to though. Germans live better, but who picks up the tab? Not them! When Trump says ' Free ride is over" Europe does not appreciate it. But occupants of the White House since Eisenhower have been trying to unshoulder the financial burden of defending Europe.
