Freedom is not free money.

But America is being asked to do the heavy lifting; in effect subsidise European social spending and a war that Ukraine has no intention of ending. And meet the challenge of China

@rooster1012 They don't show you the many who tried to help medvac a comrade and got successfully targeted by another drone and then someone tried to help them, and so on.

@rimanahbvee Roosevelt second term the political establishment had to accept the will of the people For Trump, it’s not about Ukraine it is about Europe. Having won his second election Trump is able to move ahead with his most controversial policies: make Europe pay for its own defence and stop giving them privileged access to the American market. Only then can the US meet the challenge of China.

There was no guarantee for Ukraine's security. The US specifically said so in the treaty.

Except that he does not pay US taxes.

Massed tanks as key to breakthroughs and swift exploitation have been overrated. Individual tanks as a support to small units of infantry are coming to the fore. A tank shell goes at a mile a second; unlike artillery', grenade launchers or mortars you cannot hear it coming before it hits. And a tank can dart back behind trees, which interfere with AT missile targeting

Could outbuild them, the problem is, as with electric cars, China's are much cheaper and as good (maybe better) so there has to be tariffs. Biden put a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.

@andrzejklein7846 Roosevelt was obstructed until his second term, at which point it was accepted that his policies were the people's will. Nixon had a rapprochement with China because as he said Russia and China being close tipped the balance of power irreparably against the West. There cannot be open ended support of Ukraine without reference to global considerations or other demands on the US's resources, which are limited whatever ethereal rhetoric about freedom may suggest.

@thomaslangdon2516 Yeah , yeah Putin got Trump elected the first time. But he has been elected Pres again, with an actual majority of the votes this time, so if you are talking about democracy you are talking about Trump.

'Over here mate, on me head!'

They were funding research in Wuhan. And how did that work out?

The US has been trying to get Europe to pay for its defence since Eisenhower was in the White House. Their was always some reason why they could not.
1
@fftunes Trump has won two elections.
1
Trump has not won a single election. He has won two.

Let us be honest about what the US has been doing. Every ATACMS (and Storm Shadow) strike needs a different set of terrain recognition images laded into the missile before launch. Only the US has the image library. So it is not just identifying the target's location; the US us is complicit in actually carrying out every strike and the missiles could not fly to the target without the US.

If you are willing to pay for Europe's defence (while they spend the money on welfare states) you are the Goodies.
1
@CKwoi That's what the US foreign policy elite think or at least say, but the same sort of people insisted the US were winning in Vietnam. Anyway the American taxpayer/ voters think Trump is right.
1
@PJ-qx5yt How about comparing Trump to Eisenhower, who tried to get the Germans to accept responsibility for defending themselves? As did JFK and every subsequent president--unsuccessfully.. It is just not the US taxpayers' job to unendingly financially support the defence of countries in NATO. Europe has been lulled into a dependency on the US that is unsustainable. The US did as much as it could but the will of the American people is quite clearly to end support for the war in Ukraine and look to the East where China poses a serious challenge. Free ride is over Europeans!

@SimondeMontfortSenior There had not been a general election in Britain since 1935 because if the danger Hitler presented, but the people approved of what Chamberlain did, so going to war with Germany at that time would have been so extremely unpopular it is questioable if it could have been done (Chamberlain was counting on the Soviets to fight Hitler while Britain sat it out). Anyway, why does WW3 have to start like WW2 because someone's aggression was not stopped. World War Three could just as easily start the same way as WW1 did with a big power giving an ally a blank cheque. Zelensky is insisting Ukraine gets a "security guarantee" from Trump. thereby giving Ukraine the ability to bring Russia and America into direct conflict.
1
@TorianTammas Well okay there were advantages for the US in stetting up Nato as it was originally envisioned by Washington But as it has actually developed, Nato is a way for European countries especially Germany to get the US taxpayer to do the heavy lifting and they are fed up with it. Hence Trump.

So Ukraine is a way to isolate China from Russia??
1
@Rob_F8F Most people think Xi ihas been helping Russia (and I think the direct NK help was approved by Xi). It is barely plausible that if the US backed Ukraine all the way, Xi would let Russia be ran into the ground. What seems not unlikely is there would be a Russo--Chinese alliance.
